About PTSD and Trauma

What are they? A traumatic event can lead to anxiety, sadness, anger, difficulty sleeping or concentrating, and intrusive thoughts. When these symptoms persist or begin to interfere with relationships, work, or daily life, it may be a sign of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

What causes them? A combination of social, psychological and biological factors; with individuals with a history or trauma being more susceptible to developing symptoms after a new traumatic event.

How common are they? An estimated 3.9% of the global population has experienced PTSD, with rates more than three times higher among those exposed to war or violent conflict — and especially elevated following sexual violence.

What are the effects? Anxiousness, nervousness, overwhelm, uncontrollable irritability, repeated vivid memories or nightmares, rapid heartbeat, sweating, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, isolating, and stress-related physical symptoms (e.g., headaches, nausea, chest pain)

The ABCs of PTSD + Trauma
It’s natural to feel extreme fear during or after witnessing or experiencing potentially traumatic events, including war, accidents, natural disasters, or sexual violence. Most people exposed to such events will experience distress but recover naturally with time, but for some, the pain persists, impairing daily life and negatively impacting relationships.

Treatment is effective, but many individuals don’t seek help for trauma or PTSD due to shame, fear, avoidance, or misunderstanding their symptoms.

Globally, roughly 70% of individuals will experience a potentially traumatic event during their lifetime.
