How We Treat
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Our use of skills-based therapies like DBT work together to help you find lasting healing.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy at Pasadena Villa Outpatient
At Pasadena Villa Outpatient, we create personalized plans for each client to address all aspects of their disorder. Our multidisciplinary approach — built around our proprietary Social Integration Model™ — combines clinical methods like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) with medication, practical tools, and holistic options, resulting in lasting, healthy change.
The ABCs of DBT
Dialectical behavior therapy was originally designed to treat borderline personality disorder, but DBT has been found effective in treating a variety of mental health disorders. This evidence-based treatment combines elements of cognitive behavioral therapy with meditation and self-awareness.
The four stages we use to teach our clients to incorporate DBT skills into their everyday lives:
- Stage 1 – Lays the foundation for recovery by helping clients gain control over life-threatening behaviors that interfere with treatment and daily life.
- Stage 2 – Focuses on helping clients express their feelings in a healthy way by teaching them to identify, experience, and better express their emotions.
- Stage 3 – Utilizes problem-solving to help clients tackle everyday issues and challenges in a more positive way.
- Stage 4 – Brings the lessons and skills of the preceding stages together to help clients better connect with others.
How it Helps
This skills-based therapy combines cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and practical application methods to help individuals regulate their emotions, foster successful interpersonal relationships, increase distress tolerance, and be more mindful of their thoughts, feelings, and environment.
